What are the pros and cons of being a meat cutter?

I was a retail meat cutter for several years. It does take some skill so the pay is usually decent. You normally work early in the day to produce all of the fresh cuts needed for the day. You can normally set aside the very best portions for yourself or your friends. You have many opportunites to help customers make a choice.

On the other hand, it is dangerous and accidents can and do happen. I nearly cut half my finger off in a slicer that I was cleaning with the motor on and depth gauge wide open. My fault for trying to shortcut safety requirements.

It is not as filthy as one might think. My corporate shop was extremely strict about cleanliness. We even had other teams come in for training because we were the best in the company.

I found my consumption of meat took a permanent nosedive. It has never seemed as appetizing as it was before I was a cutter. The smell of fresh meat is no longer appealing. The smell affects you for the rest of your life. Your shoes and sometimes your pants get spattered with “juice”. Please don’t refer to it ignorantly as blood. Some pieces of meat are quite heavy. The cutting floor can be quite slippery if there are spills. Sometimes your dog finds bits of dried meat stuck on you when you get home.

I enjoyed my time as a meat cutter. It was one of the best jobs I ever had.

They work well, they're low maintenance, and they produce great tasting food. What more could a person ask for? While they definitely produce a different flavour quality than gas or (particularly) charcoal alternatives, the best electric barbecue grills can produce juicy, caramelized, seared-to-perfection meals

When I worked in the grocery store in college, a couple of the guys in the meat room were missing fingers from various accidents...

Cuisinart makes a great one for like $150. Great for cold cuts, cheese, and bread. Definitely more than enough for home use IMO. (My mom has it, and my family in Europe has an even more basic one that they use twice a day, every day, bc they live on salami, cheese and bread lol, breakfast and dinner.) Or better and newer option is https://lilgrill.com/best-meat-slicer/
